The ThermoFisher Ion S5™ XL NGS system offers a streamlined targeted sequencing workflow, delivering reliable performance and fast results.

The Ion S5 XL System utilizes semiconductor sequencing technology, combined with impressive computing power both on-board and through the included Torrent Server, to produce high-quality sequencing data.

A sequencing run on the Ion S5 or Ion S5 XL systems begins by loading a reagent cartridge, buffer, cleaning solution, and waste container. The Ion S5 chip is then loaded, and the run is started. As the DNA polymerase adds bases to the template, hydrogen ions are released, causing a change in pH. This change is detected and converted into a sequencing signal through ion-sensitive wells that hold the templated beads.

The system can generate read lengths of up to 400 bp (or up to 600 bp in some cases) with three available semiconductor chips, which can produce up to 5 million, 20 million, or 80 million reads per chip (see Fasteris ThermoFisher - Ion S5 Services below).
